The Main coon breed is a long hair breed, and the only native breed to the US. They are typically medium to large and have muscular and stocky builds. This breed is highly adaptable to their environment and very loving towards their owners. These playful and curious creatures are often referred to as “gentle giants”.
Common health conditions
- Hip dysplasia is a hereditary condition in the Selkirk Rex that affects the hips and it can cause pain and lameness.
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy causes an enlargement in the heart muscle where the walls begin to thicken.
- Spinal muscular atrophy is caused by the death of spinal cord neurons, which can eventually lead to muscle weakness and degeneration. This does not cause pain however simply causes the kittens to walk differently.
