Savannah

Overview

Savannah cats are active, adventurous kitties who enjoy jumping around high places. They are a cross between a domestic cat and a serval, a medium-sized, large-eared African cat. Their coat comes in a spotted leopard-like pattern. Unlike many cats, Savannah’s absolutely love being in the water and will seek it out. They are very athletic and are tall, lean cat, with long legs, big ears, and a long neck.

Common Health Conditions

  • The Savannah’s jaw bones make them susceptible to periodontal disease, which can be avoided with good dental care. Daily brushing has been shown to be very beneficial as well as regular dental cleanings from the vet.
  • The largest number of behavioral complaints from owners of hybrid cats fall into two categories – lack of litter box use and aggression.
  • Portosystemic liver shunt is a congenital abnormality in which blood vessels allow blood to bypass the liver. As a result, the blood is not cleansed by the liver as it should be.
