Highlights From NHV’s Integrative Veterinary Seminar

There is so much information and misinformation out there about nutrition, diet, and treatment solutions for our animals. Do you ever wish you could weed through all that noise, and find some practical answers? Well, we heard your discomfort. Yesterday, NHV Natural Pet Products came together with CANWI for a special Integrative Veterinary Seminar with the amazing Dr. Donna Raditic in New York City.

Guests were treated to sparkling wine, a delicious 3-course lunch at New York’s Blue Water Grill, and an amazing swag bag filled with NHV Natural Pet Product supplements, Waggers my little lion and wolf treats, Caru pet food, and all kinds of wonderful goodies. A few very lucky people walked away with the silent auction items—gift baskets, a golf lesson with a Chelsea golf pro, and the opportunity for a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Raditic—the entire event was a treat! All proceeds from the auction went to fund CANWI’s efforts to further education and research on pet food and nutrition.

This unique pet wellness event began with a bit of mingling between pet caregivers. It was a small group event through invite-only— which meant that each and every person that attended, was there because they were dedicated to improving the lives of pets—their passion was palatable. It was amazing to be around such an enthusiastic and engaged group of individuals.

After a bit of mingling, Patra de Silva, president of NHV spoke for a few minutes about herbs, supplements, and the beginnings of NHV. Images of just some of the pets NHV has helped throughout the years played in the background. Patra spoke about how NHV “herbal formulation is specifically made for pets using human-grade ingredients”, and how “all the herbs are organic or ethically wild-crafted and not irradiated, which means the true phytoceutical properties are intact”. There were also some personal anecdotes as she spoke about her muse for NHV— a little beagle cross, rescued from Sri Lanka, named Lady.

We don’t need to be caught in an impossible choice and horrible cycle of sickness, drugs, and suffering. We can use ALL the tools at our disposal to help our pets. Using ALL the tools means diet… it means supplements… it means other modalities such as acupuncture and it also means pharmaceuticals when and if necessary

And then it was time for the featured speaker, Dr. Donna Raditic. Dr. Raditic’s presentation on pet health, wellness, and nutrition were wonderfully informative. Here are a couple of highlights that she spoke about.

Therapeutic Vet Diets Aren’t The Enemy

Dr. Donna spoke about how Veterinarian Prescription based diets or therapeutic diets are not the enemies. She felt that this line of diets was one area where the pet food companies had really “stepped up their game”, in that more research had been put into the food.

However, AGE’s in Pet Food Are A Concern

AGEs in pet food can be harmful

In Advanced Glycation End Products in Foods and a Practical Guide to Their Reduction in the Diet the authors define AGE’s in the following way:

Modern diets are largely heat-processed and as a result, contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs) are known to contribute to increased oxidant stress and inflammation, which are linked to the recent epidemics of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), also known as glycotoxins, are a diverse group of highly oxidant compounds with pathogenic significance in diabetes and in several other chronic diseases (1–6). AGEs are created through a nonenzymatic reaction between reducing sugars and free amino groups of proteins, lipids, or nucleic acids. This reaction is also known as the Maillard or browning reaction – Jaime Uribarri, MD, Sandra Woodruff, RD, et al.

Well, it was simply an amazing event. Everyone walked away with some practical takeaways on how to better improve a pet’s health. We heard from so many attendees who were blown away at what an incredible speaker Dr. Raditic was and how so much of what she said opened their eyes and made them think. NHV looks forward to hosting many more seminars just like this throughout the US—keep your eyes and ears open and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to keep up all the news.

Dr. Raditic completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She built a unique practice in Massachusetts, which offered integrative medicine, as she obtained specialties in acupuncture, chiropractic care, as well as botanical and dietary supplements. She is a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and was a Professor for both the Nutrition and the Integrative Medicine Services at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She currently does consulting and lectures on nutrition and integrative veterinary medicine. She is a holistic veterinarian, integrative medicine specialist, and board-certified animal nutritionist.

CANWI stands for the Companion Animal Nutrition and Wellness Institute. CANWI was born in 2014 from a conversation between two veterinarians: Dr. Karen Becker and Dr. Donna Raditic, who saw a need for an independent grass-roots organization dedicated to improving the lives of companion animals through education. It is an IRS-approved 501(C)(3) organization that has funded a 2-year Veterinary Nutrition Residency at the University of Tennessee, offered several pet parent forums across the United States, and has numerous projects on the drawing board.
