Overview
The Bouvier Des Flandres may sound fancy, but the word 'Bouvier' actually means herder of cattle in French, and the breed originates from the Flandres region in Belgium. Bred as all-around farm dogs by Belgian monks in the 19th century, these pups would herd cattle, guard livestock, and even pull carts to market. They served an essential purpose during both world wars, pulling ambulances and rescuing fallen soldiers. Unfortunately, many were killed in the field, so their numbers were decimated after WWII, but thankfully the breed survived. With a large commanding build, these pups were bred to intimidate a cow and withstand a kick to the head without getting injured. Their non-shedding double coat comes in black, gray, tan, and brindle. You'll want to brush out your Bouvier regularly to prevent their undercoat from matting and keep them from looking like a wild yeti! With somewhat mysterious origins, it is believed that the Berger Picard and the Irish Wolfhound may be part of the gene pool of the Bouvier. A Bouvier Des Flandres named Lucky once lived in the White House with President Reagan and Mrs. Reagan while in office. These commanding pooches have also been the favorite companions of celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Warren Beatty, and Diane Keaton. Jackie O's childhood dog was also a Bouvier!

The Bouvier Des Flandres is a thinking, and herding dog that was bred to work without supervision. This dog loves to work! But due to their extreme intelligence, daily mental stimulation is very important with this breed. They would be ideal companions for any sport, herding activity, or outdoor pastime. Bouvier Des Flandres are easily trained at a young age and appreciate consistency, so if you're not on point, a Bouvier may take the lead instead. Early socialization is key with this breed because they are naturally wary of strangers and fiercely protective. They may not be the best dog for first-time owners unless the person is committed to the level of training and socialization required for keeping a Bouvier healthy and happy. These large (60-95 lb), commanding pups may have a tough time socializing at dog parks because of their intimidating presence, so they may be happiest in an open field on their own.
