This breed can be described as loving, patient, and playful. Though they are tolerant and affectionate, the Selkirk is not always a lap cat, but he likes people and other animals. They are muscular with a rectangular body, long legs, and large round sweet eyes. Their dense coat comes in three layers and is soft with natural curls. With his sociable nature, he dislikes being left alone for long periods. Keep this fun-loving cat entertained with a fishing-pole toy or flashlight beam, and he will be thrilled.

- Hip dysplasia is a hereditary condition in the Selkirk Rex that affects the hips and it can cause pain and lameness.
