Adrenal Disorders in Dogs

Help your pet feel better and healthier with vet-formulated supplements that help support the adrenal glands in dogs, which produce crucial hormones a dog’s body needs to control the balance of potassium, sodium, stress, and blood sugar. In addition, the supplements increase the overall nutrition and health of your dog.

A dog's adrenal glands are located just in front of the kidneys and have two parts - the cortex and the medulla.

The adrenal cortex is subdivided into three layers that each produces a different set of steroid hormones. The outer layer helps control the body’s balance of sodium and potassium salts, the middle layer produces glucocorticoids used to metabolize nutrients and reduce inflammation, and the inner layer produces sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.

The adrenal medulla releases epinephrine (also called adrenaline) and norepinephrine, both of which slow digestion and increase heart output, blood pressure, and blood glucose. It plays an important role in responding to stress and low blood sugar (glucose).

The two most common adrenal gland disorders are Addison's disease and Cushing's disease.

Addison’s Disease

Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands are unable to produce the hormones needed for normal functioning. While the exact cause of Addison's disease isn't known, it is thought to be an autoimmune condition in which the body destroys some of its own tissue. The adrenal gland can also be destroyed by other conditions including cancer. Addison's disease is rare in dogs, however, when it does occur, the onset can be severe and sudden, or may occur intermittently and vary in severity. Milk thistle and Supraglan will help ease symptoms in your dog and provide adrenal support.

Symptoms of Addison’s Disease in Dogs

  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Severe weight loss

Cushing’s Disease

Cushing's disease is caused by the excess production of cortisol and is common in adult and older dogs. Adrenal support supplements can be helpful in relieving symptoms. The disease can result from a benign tumor in the pituitary or adrenal glands or can be a side effect of corticosteroid drug use.

Symptoms of Cushing’s Disease in Dogs

  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Increased appetite/overeating
  • Heat intolerance
  • Lethargy
  • Potbelly
  • Panting
  • Obesity
  • Weakness
  • Thin skin
  • Hair loss
  • Bruising

Additional Support

Visit your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an adrenal disorder. To give your dog adrenal support and aid in their recovery, always ensure they have a constant supply of freshwater and eat only high quality nourishing food.
