Greyhound

Overview

Greyhounds are often known for being friendly, non-aggressive and recognized for their quiet, gentle, and affectionate nature. They belong to a family of dogs called sighthounds, which were originally bred to hunt other animals. They are highly intelligent, sensitive, and good with other animals. Greyhounds have long, powerful, legs, deep chest, flexible spine, and a slim build. Their top speed is 70km/hour. Though they were originally bred for racing, Greyhounds now participate in other sports such as obedience and agility.

Common Health Conditions

  • Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer, generally affecting large and giant breed. The first sign of osteosarcoma is lameness, but the dog will need x-rays to determine if the cause is cancer.
    • Greyhounds are very sensitive to insecticides, and may benefit from a natural flea and tick spray.
    • Greyhounds have big hearts and often have minor murmurs. Some are more serious than others, and many heart murmurs, and the underlying conditions that cause them, are treatable.
