Boxer

Overview

Boxers are known as the breed with the longest tongue! A Boxer named Brandy with a whopping 17" (43 cm) tongue still holds the record for the longest tongue on a dog! These pups were initially bred for seizing and holding onto large game like bears and wild boar until their masters returned. Many believe that these powerful dogs descend from a now-extinct German breed called the Bullenbeisser while others are more convinced that they share more ancestry with the English Bulldog and the Bull Terrier. Aptly named because of their distinctive ability to throw punches, Boxers are energetic dogs that excel in all kinds of jobs and canine sports. Their short, smooth coat comes in either white, fawn, or brindle and is very low maintenance in the grooming department. These dogs are consistently in the top 10 most popular breeds across America and are so cherished that some say: "Boxers are like potato chips; you can't have just one!"

Boxer Personality

Boxer Personality

Known for their athleticism, clownish personality, and desire to please, Boxers will adapt to any situation if it means they can remain alongside their favorite people. It is recommended that you keep these large pups (65 - 80 lbs) out of the extreme cold and heat because their short coat does not keep them warm in the cold and their short muzzle may cause them to overheat quickly. Their short coat is generally very low maintenance, but remember to clean their face folds (which may accumulate bacteria). In some countries, Boxers rival Shepherds and the Belgian Malinois as police dogs. Early socialization is very important (first 16 weeks) with Boxers; their even tempered personality may become fearful and skittish without enough exposure to new experiences. Boxers make great family pets for both young and old. Their naturally sensitive demeanor means that they will quickly adapt to all kinds of people and situations. So if you're on the lookout for a clownish companion that is capable of working long hours by your side, and loves to give you kisses with their massive tongue, consider getting a Boxer!
