Rat Terrier

Rat Terriers are lively, muscular dogs that are often described as “compact but meaty.” They are known for being fun, feisty, energetic, and big people pleasers who love to entertain and make people laugh. They have strong shoulders, deep chests and muscular legs. The ears of the Rat Terrier are carried erect when alert and can be either tipped or upright. They have a big heart and a ton of energy. Like all terriers, the Rattie takes great pleasure in digging, barking and investigating. He’s generally not yappy, but if he doesn’t receive enough attention, he will let you know!

Common Health Conditions

  • Seasonal allergies generally occur at certain times of the year. Some of the common causes of seasonal allergies include dust, dust mites, pollen, grass and flea bites.
  • If your dog has a weakened or compromised immune system, however, they can develop demodectic mange. This disorder can be localized, occurring as patches of red, scaly, skin with hair loss on the head, neck and forelegs.
  • Bordetella infection is often referred to as ‘kennel cough’. The disease results in inflammation of the trachea and bronchi. Various types of respiratory disease can affect all breeds of dogs.
