Rottweiler

Overview

The Rottweiler is one of the more recognizable breeds in the world with his large head, solidly muscled body, and distinctively handsome black-and-tan markings. He is intelligent, strong, and loyal. They typically weigh between 85 to 130 pounds. Properly socialized Rottweilers are calm, confident, and courageous, never shy. They have a self-assured aloofness and don't make friends with people immediately. Instead, they take a wait-and-see attitude with new people or situations. With their family, they are affectionate, often following them around the house.

Common Health Conditions

  • Rottweilers can develop heart problems, including cardiomyopathy and subaortic stenosis (SAS), a narrowing of the aorta that carries blood away from the heart.
  • Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer that generally affects giant and large breeds.
  • If you notice that your Rottie is constantly itching his skin, or if there are rashes (often small red bumps developing in the undercoat), he may be suffering from canine allergies or eczema.
