Kerry Blue Terrier

Overview

Also known as the Irish Blue Terrier, the Kerry or simply the Blue- Kerry Blue Terriers originated in the mountainous regions of County Kerry in Ireland. They were originally bred as an all-purpose working farm dog, and used to hunt, herd and guard the home. Today they are alert, adaptable, and animated watchdogs and a great family companion. They are often used as police dogs in Ireland. Kerries are energetic and often rambunctious dogs who love to play hard. They can also be stubborn and persistent, but they are loving and loyal with their family.

 

Common Health Conditions

  • Kerry Blue Terriers can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions.
  • Hip dysplasia is an inherited disease that causes the hip joints to form improperly and leads to arthritis.
  • Kerry Blue’s are prone to IBD, a chronic disease of the intestinal tract. Most dogs with IBD have a history of recurrent vomiting and diarrhea.
