Azawakh

Azawakh

Azawakh’s are rare sighthounds named after the Azawakh Valley in the Sahara desert. They are lean, elegant, slender, proud, loyal and protectors of the home. They were originally companions and guardians to nomads, and skilled as hunters. As family dogs and companions they are playful, affectionate, energetic and loyal. They have a short, fine coat and almost ‘skeletal’ like appearance similar to that of a Greyhound or Whippet. With their thin skin and low body feed, Azawakhs need a cozy indoor environment to rest.

Common Health Conditions

  • Wobbler syndrome, is a disease of the cervical spine (at the neck) that is commonly seen in larger breed dogs such as the Azawakh. It is characterized by compression of the spinal cord and nerves, which can lead to neurological issues or back/neck pain.
  • Like other sighthounds, the Azawakh has naturally very low levels of thyroid hormone, but this can become problematic for some who may suffer lethargy, hair loss, and severe cold intolerance as a result.
  • Just like humans, cats and dogs can suffer from seasonal and environmental allergies, resulting in some unpleasant itching and scratching.
