Blood Parasites in Dogs

Blood parasites are organisms that take up residence in your dog and are usually transmitted through the bite of a flea, tick, mite, or fly. Some dogs adapt well to the existence of parasites and experience no adverse reactions. Others experience intense itchiness that can lead to infection due to licking, chewing, biting, or scratching to relieve discomfort. Other symptoms to watch for include loss of appetite, diarrhea, and general fatigue. In some cases, blood parasites can cause serious illness resulting in death.

Symptoms of Blood Parasites in Dogs

  • poor appetite
  • weight loss
  • unusual licking, chewing, biting or scratching
  • general weakness and fatigue
  • hair loss
  • skin sores
  • flaky skin

Additional Support

Frequent grooming is a good way to detect parasites or the evidence they leave behind including skin sores, hair loss, and dry, flaky skin. To help prevent the disease, reduce your dog's exposure to blood sucking insects and check their feces for traces of "bugs" that resemble grains of rice.

Remembers to never self diagnose your pet or administer any product without first consulting your vet. To support your pet's recovery, always ensure they have a constant supply of fresh water and serve only high quality nourishing food.
