Description
If your furkiddo is always thirsty, has less energy, is looking dull and is maybe carrying a little extra weight, they may be suffering from Cushing’s disease and malnutrition. Keep in mind - a hormonal imbalance could be mistaken for normal aging but something more serious may be going on.
What is Cushing's Disease in Dogs and Cats?
Cushing's disease is caused by the overproduction of cortisol and is a fairly common hormonal imbalance in our furry friends. A range of causes can overstimulate the adrenal glands, but most commonly, Cushing's is caused by a pituitary gland tumor, known as an adenoma. As scary as this sounds, if caught early, your pet may be able to maintain a good quality of life and manage their symptoms. If left untreated, this type of tumor may later develop into cancer. The telltale signs of Cushing's develops from the body being exposed to excess cortisol (or related hormones) over an extended period of time. Symptoms of Cushing's may come across as normal signs of aging so age is most likely a factor as well. Cushing syndrome in dogs does not usually develop until much later in life (around age 10). Although less common, Cushing's Disease can affect kitties too.
Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to Cushing's, partly because certain breeds are more sensitive to stress. Poodles, Jack Russell Terriers, Beagles, and Dachshunds are a few dog breeds more likely to develop this kind of adrenal imbalance. Keep in mind, this is not a complete list of breeds.
