Natural Support for IBD in cats

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in cats (IBD) is a condition that mainly affects middle-aged to senior kitties, though it can occur at any age. IBD in cats is caused by an inflammatory response to an irritated and inflamed GI tract.

How TumFlora Supports Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Cats

The exact causes of IBD in cats are unknown, however, evidence does suggest that it may arise from an abnormal interaction between bacterial populations in the intestines, diet, a compromised immune system, and other environmental factors as well as genetic abnormalities. TumFlora helps support the body on a variety of levels, which helps address this complex problem.

To help address the imbalance of bacterial populations in the intestines, TumFlora’s blend of herbs work to improve natural intestinal flora. Herbs like licorice and ashwagandha offer support for the immune system, while vitamin and mineral dense herbs like slippery elm and oregon grape help improve nutrient absorption.

In addition to helping with IBD in cats, TumFlora can also help support your kitty if they are suffering from food allergies, gastrointestinal ulcers, and bacterial infections of the gut. Don’t wait for your kitty to have IBD for adding TumFlora, this gentle supplement can be used on a long term proactive basis to support your pet’s gut health.

Additional Support for IBD in Cats

Inflammatory response thickens the lining of the GI tract, which ends up affecting digestion, absorption of nutrients, and healthy bathroom habits. Cats with Irritable Bowel Disease can experience the following symptoms:

Symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Cats

  • Vomiting
  • Frequent diarrhea
  • Blood in the stool
  • Lethargy
  • Weight Loss

Your veterinarian may recommend treatment for intestinal parasites as well as a combination of medications and diet therapy as a first step. A novel protein, like rabbit or duck, may also be recommended. It takes time and your veterinarian may need to try several different therapies and medications. FAQ

Is inflammatory bowel disease in cats painful?

Yes. With inflammatory bowel disease, the intestinal wall becomes irritated and swollen, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes blood in the stool. Cats are very sensitive creatures so when they experience an injury, whether large or small, they experience a great deal of discomfort.

What can I feed my cat with IBD?

For cats suffering with IBD, often the main cause is related to food allergies, so hypoallergenic diets and food trials are typically recommended. Such diet changes should only be done with the proper guidance of a veterinary professional.

If you would like a personalized nutrition plan, our in-house veterinarian, Dr. Amanda can create one based on your kitty’s needs.

Is IBS in cats curable?

While IBD and IBS may have similar names and symptoms, IBD is often more severe than IBS, because it may present ulcers, destruction of the intestine walls, and sores. None of them is curable, but both can be managed especially with nutritional therapy and vet prescribed medications.

How long can cats live with IBD?

Depending on how advanced the IBD is and what the underlying causes are, with the proper diet and care plan, kitties with IBD may still maintain a good quality of life and have many years ahead of them. However, for some kitties, if their IBD progresses into , their life expectancy may decrease.

Is there a difference between IBD and IBS?

Although diarrhea is a common symptom in both, IBD refers to inflammation in the intestinal tract caused by an autoimmune response while Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) refers to colitis caused by stress. In IBS, symptoms tend to improve once you remove the causes of stress and use the correct therapy, whereas Inflammatory Bowel disease can present more severe symptoms and requires vet-prescribed medication and nutrition supplementation for longer, sometimes for life.

Modifications to the diet are very common when dealing with symptoms of IBD since the main cause can be linked to food allergies, so a hypoallergenic diet can really help support your kitty's recovery. IBD symptoms management may also include medications for internal parasites, B12 vitamin therapy, and antibiotics.

Different factors may lead to this unpleasant condition like allergies, bacteria, parasites and imbalances in your furkiddo’s immune system, however, there is no definitive cause for irritable bowel disease in cats. Initial testing for IBD in cats can include blood work, stool analysis, and scans of the GI tract (ultrasound and x-ray). These tests are meant to rule out all other conditions that may present similar symptoms to IBD such as food sensitivity, hepatic illnesses, kidney issues, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), diabetes, parasitic or bacterial infections, and hyperthyroidism, to name a few.
