Coton de Tulear

Overview

This smart little dog with the cottony coat originated in Madagascar and is closely related to the Bichon Frise and the Maltese. They are typically small, and weigh between 8 to 13 pounds. They are happy and want nothing more than to spend time and share a cuddle with their owners. They form strong bonds with family members and don't like to be separated from them. The Coton's coat is one of his distinguishing features. It's long, soft, and thick, with what can only be described as a fluffy, cottony texture.

 

Common Health Conditions

• Lipomas are benign masses or tumors that develop commonly in dogs. They are usually soft, with limited mobility under the skin.
• If your pet gets itchy during spring, summer or fall, she's probably reacting to seasonal, environmental allergens. Typically pets with seasonal allergies have reactions to ragweed, grasses, pollens, molds and trees.
• A liver shunt occurs when a portion of blood bypasses the liver and goes directly to the heart. This allows toxins to build up in the blood stream and causes neurological signs.
