Dogue de Bordeaux

Overview

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a large French mastiff breed—and one of the most ancient French dog breeds. They are very powerful dogs, with a muscular body. They have a sleek, easy to care for coat, and only require moderate exercise despite their size. This breed has a Bulldog-like jaw, large eyes, and a deep furrowed brow. Loyal, self-assured, and territorial, he's a superb guard dog who's also capable of competing in many sports and activities, including carting, obedience, therapy work, tracking, and search and rescue.

Common Health Conditions

  • Because of its brachycephalic head, the Dogue can be affected by breathing problems. Some may be intolerant of heat or exercise as a result.
  • Another heart problem in the breed is dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently.
  • The Dogue’s unnatural folds of wrinkled skin are predisposed to hiding dirt and moisture, which bacteria and yeast love. Chronic allergies cause itchy skin and scratching that can lead to skin infections.
