Irish Red and White Setter

Overview

Before the all Red Irish Setter, there was the Irish White Setter, just a bit shorter and stockier than their cousin. They originated in Ireland during the 17th century and are athletic, medium-sized dogs bred primarily for hunting. It’s a tireless dog breed and very enthusiastic at everything they do, especially if it involves their favorite game - hunting. They can be strong-willed and difficult to train, and they can show signs of separation anxiety if left alone too much.

 Common Health Conditions

• Hip dysplasia, an inherited disease in Setters that causes the hip joints to form improperly and leads to arthritis.
• Some Irish Red and White Setters may experience eye problems such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.
• Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid gland. A common hormonal disease in dogs in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroxin hormone.
