What are Lice in Dogs and Cats?
First, let us learn what lice are. These external parasites are wingless, flat creatures that reside in your furkiddo’s hair. The claws on their six legs allow them to hang onto our furriends while they feed on skin debris, blood or hair secretion.
How Do Furkids Get Lice?
Unlike fleas, lice can only crawl but not fly or hop. They also can only live for 1-2 days without a host. That’s why the chances of your furkiddo getting lice are higher through direct transmission from other furkiddos of the same species. For example, a dog park with many other potentially infested dogs is a high-risk location for getting lice.
Your little one could also get lice from sharing grooming tools or collars with another infested pet (of the same species).

FAQ
Can I get lice from my dog?
Lice choose their hosts, meaning they are species-specific. Interestingly, the size of their claws is tailored to a particular species, so they can only hang onto the hair shaft of that specific species. That’s why it is unlikely for dog lice to infect humans or other animals.
Where do dogs get lice from?
Our pups usually get lice through direct transmission from pups that already have lice issues. So, it’s easy for your furkid to be infested with lice from places like dog daycare or parks where they can get into contact with other dogs.
Objects like dog collars and grooming tools may also be lice transmission devices.
What color are cat lice?
They are white in color, making them hard to spot.
Is cat lice contagious to other cats?
Cat lice infestation is extremely contagious among kitties. They can get lice from one another via direct and indirect contact. So, if one of your kitties has lice problems, there is a high possibility your other kitties have them too.
