FAQ
How contagious is FeLV?
An FeLV positive kitty sheds a large quantity of the virus in their saliva, as well as in other body fluids like urine, feces, tears or nasal discharge so these are the key methods of transmission. FeLV is not a highly contagious virus, and transmission generally requires prolonged close contact between infected cats and susceptible cats.
What does FeLV do to a cat?
FeLV causes a cat’s immune system to become compromised and make their body more vulnerable to other diseases, and chronic infections. FeLV is the most common cause of lymphoma cancer in cats.
What does FeLV positive mean?
FeLV is a retrovirus that weakens a cat's immune system and cannot be transmitted to humans. Cats who test positive for FeLV can live for many years without serious infection or illness with the right support and care plan so don’t think of this as a death sentence for your pet.
How long does it take FeLV to show up?
A cat may test negative for FeLV during the incubation period which can last between 2 to 4 weeks, but can be as long as 12 months.
