American Bobtail

American Bobtail

Overview of American Bobtail

The American Bobtail is a medium to large athletic cat breed that combines the 'wild' appearance of its ancestors with the lively personality of a domestic cat. Ranging between 7-16 lbs and coming in a range of coat colors, with both long-haired and short-haired varieties, its most distinguishing feature is its stubby "bobbed" tail that may be straight, slightly curved, or kinked. No two tails are alike! The American bobtail's origins came to be when a feral cat with a short tail and a domestic cat had kittens who also had short tails. These kittens combined with the efforts of experienced breeders helped create the American Bobtail into the robust, playful breed we know today.

Personality of American Bobtail

Athletic, curious, and intelligent, American Bobtails love their pet pawrents and can even be trained to walk on a leash and travel in cars. Their gentle meow and deep sensitivity make the American Bobtail a great choice as an emotional support animal. If you’re considering adopting one, keep in mind that these stubby-trailed kitties can be prone to spine and joint issues due to their genetic make-up.

Common Health Conditions in American Bobtails

Spine and Joint Conditions (eg. Hip Dysplasia or Arthritis): A genetic mutation is responsible for the shortened tail in the American Bobtail which can impact spine formation and can create issues in the spine, joints, and cartilage.

The urinary tract is made up of the kidneys, ureters (tubes that carry urine to the bladder for storage), the urinary bladder, and the urethra (the tube that lets your cat pee). A urinary tract infection (UTI) can affect any one of these areas or a combination of these areas. However, generally, a urinary tract infection is referring to a bladder infection.
