Lakeland Terrier

Overview

The mischievous Lakeland (also known as Lakeys) love their family and they are great companion dogs for people who appreciate terriers. Formerly known as the Patterdale Lakeland Terrier, they are one of the oldest known terrier breeds. They were kept by farmers who used them to hunt the foxes that attacked their sheep pens. Like all terrier breeds, the Lakeland is a fearless dog, and they love to run and chase and thrive on outdoor activities. Although they love the company of people, they do have an independent mind and can be a bit on the stubborn side.

Common Health Conditions

  • They can have some genetic eye problems, including cataracts and glaucoma.
  • They can develop Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) a bone disorder that requires surgery.
  • Lakeland Terriers are at an increased risk for developing certain types of cancer.
