Description

Tracheal Collapse Support for Pets

Tracheal collapse is an acquired, non- congenital, disease. It can occur in the neck region, within the chest, where the trachea is located, or in both locations. The cartilage rings of the trachea (windpipe) are shaped like the letter C, lying on its back. A small membrane covers the top of the ring. The cartilages loses its rigidity, and the membrane stretches. For this reason, the rings may be collapsed, the windpipe flattened, and mild to severe obstruction of the airway may develop.

The cause is not well understood, but proposed theories include genetic factors such as breed, nutritional influences, neurologic problems, and degeneration of the tracheal cartilages.

Symptoms of Tracheal Collapse in Dogs and Cats

  • Persistent, dry, harsh cough (“Honking” cough)
  • Difficult breathing and wheezy noise
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Bluish tinge to the gums

FAQ

What breeds of dogs are most affected by tracheal collapse?

Small breed dogs are most affected with the disease, especially Yorkshire terriers, Pomeranians, Poodles and Chihuahuas. Affected dogs are often middle aged or older, though it can be seen in some young dogs as well. Dogs that are overweight or that live in a household with smokers may be more at risk or at least more likely to show clinical signs.

Are there other conditions that can be similar to tracheal collapse in dogs?

Yes, other causes of coughing like congestive heart failure, must be ruled out with your veterinarian. However, in some cases, heart disease and collapsed trachea are present at the same time.

Besides the supplements, what else can I to do to help my dog with tracheal collapse?

Weight management is extremely important to reduce the severity of the symptoms caused by a collapsed trachea. Preventing over-excitement, avoiding exposure to smoke, and using a harness rather than a collar is highly recommended. Taking your dog to the vet periodically is also key for a successful treatment.
