Norwegian Lundehund

Overview

Lunde is the Norwegian word for puffin, a bird also known as a sea parrot. The Norwegian Lundehund, also known as Lundie, were the only dog breed created for the job of puffin hunting. They would climb cliffs on Norwegian islands and retrieve live puffins, as they structure would allow the to grip, climb, descend and squeeze into small cracks. They are friendly, athletic and intelligent dogs who can be quite independent.

 

Common Health Conditions

• A condition called Lundehund syndrome affects all members of the breed to some degree. It is a collective term for a group of intestinal disorders.
• They can inherit or develop several different eye conditions.
• Hip dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the hip joints to form improperly and leads to arthritis.
