Otterhound

Overview

The Otterhound was bred in Britain as scent trackers for hunting otter on land and in water. They almost disappeared after hunting otters became illegal in Britain, but enthusiasts have repurposed them as family companions. They are known to have a loud barking hound voice and they can be energetic and fun-loving dogs. The Otterhounds are known for their dense shaggy coat, webbed feet and their love for swimming.

Common Health Conditions

  • Hip and Elbow dysplasia causes the hip joints to form improperly and leads to arthritis.
  • Three out of every four Otterhounds develop non-tumorous growths or tumorous growths (benign or malignant) as they grow older.
  • Allergies, swimming, overgrowth of hair in the ear canals, or an accumulation of earwax can all predispose your Otterhound to ear infections.
