Rhodesian Ridgeback

Overview

Rhodesian Ridgebacks typically weigh between 70 to 85 pounds. They are independent and intelligent, a combination that can be entertaining, frustrating, and rewarding, all in one. It's important to begin training early and to be firm and consistent from puppyhood. Because of his hunting roots, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has a high prey drive. They are faithful friends, and very protective of their loved ones.

Common Health Conditions

  • Ridgies can develop hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.
  • Ridgebacks can suffer from several kinds of cancer, most notably mast cell tumors.
  • Dental disease is the most common chronic problem in pets, affecting 80% of all dogs by age two. Teeth should be brushed regularly.
