Silky Terrier

Overview

The Australian Silky Terrier is a small and compact short-legged terrier. Their long grey and white or blue and tan coat hangs in a flat, glossy line down their back. These are alert, active, playful dogs, but also very loving. Silky Terriers can be great playmates for gentle children. They are fairly friendly toward strangers but can be aggressive to other dogs and pets. Silkies are excellent watchdogs, though they are sometimes known for barking too much. The Silky can meet its hunting needs by playing games and hunting toys around the house and yard.

 

Common Health Conditions

• Silky Terriers may be susceptible to diabetes. The classic symptoms of diabetes in dogs are excessive thirst, increased urination, and weight loss despite normal or increased food consumption.
• Collapsing trachea is often seen in smaller breeds and can be seen occasionally in the Silky Terrier. It is caused by a weakening of the cartilage; the tracheal or windpipe flattens and obstructs the airway. Symptoms include coughing that sounds like a goose honk, fainting, and an intolerance to exercise.
• Cushing’s Disease is a malfunction of the adrenal glands causing them to produce too much steroid hormone. This is a common problem in dogs, and your Silky Terrier is more likely than other dogs to be affected.
