Holistic Rabbit Kidney Supplement Support

Sometimes it can be tricky to tell what is bothering your furry companion, because no two pets are alike! But a common health issue that affects our bunny pals is kidney disease. These two bean-shaped organs have several key roles: removing metabolic wastes from the body and maintaining the correct balance of water and electrolytes (salts) within the body. Another important role is producing essential hormones that help maintain healthy blood pressure, production of new blood cells, and allow the body to absorb salt. Lastly, the urinary system processes vitamin D - an integral component for calcium absorption and bone growth.

The two most common types of renal issues are kidney degeneration (often age-related) which can lead to organ failure and acute kidney failure, where symptoms develop suddenly over a few days or weeks and can lead to the kidneys shutting down quickly. This may cause irregularities in your bunny’s urinary output. To figure out if your furkiddo has kidney issues, your vet can run some tests like bloodwork, urinalysis, radiographs, ultrasounds, and/or CT scans, to further investigate their symptoms. The typical course of action for rabbit kidney problems includes intravenous fluid therapy (under the supervision of your trusted vet), the addition of glycoproteins and a kidney-specific, balanced diet.

Symptoms of Rabbit Kidney Problems

  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Inappropriate urination
  • Change in frequency of urination
  • Straining to urinate
  • Abnormal urine color
  • Fever
  • Soft stools, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Possible seizures
  • Tender kidneys (abdominal pain)

For kidney degeneration or acute kidney issues, we'd suggest adding a natural rabbit kidney supplement like NHV Tripsy™ to your bunny's daily feeding schedule. It can safely be used short-term as well as long-term as a natural health support. Tripsy™ promotes healthy kidney, bladder, and urinary tract functions and may eliminate kidney stone formation in all of your bunny pals (both young and old).

How NHV’s Supplements Ease Rabbit Kidney Problems

Kidney issues can cause a lot of stress and worry in your Lop and Lionhead pals. Ingredients like parsley piert and stone root have diuretic properties that gently regulate urine flow, if on the low/infrequent side, to help keep things flowing normally and prevent the formation of kidney and bladder calculi (often called stones). Herbs like Wild hydrangea and Gravel root have traditionally been used for supporting kidney and urinary health by helping to break down, dissolve and remove stones and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Other ingredients like Echinacea purpurea and Oregon grape's defense against microorganisms help combat infections. And lastly, Marshmallow soothes irritated internal tissues and protects cells from oxidative damage.

Causes for Kidney Issues in Rabbits

  • Shock
  • Trauma
  • Stress
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure
  • Blood infection
  • Urinary tract obstruction
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Ageing
  • Diabetes

FAQ

I once read that Echinacea isn’t good for rabbits. Is that true?

It is important to keep in mind that any herb can be toxic for pets (and humans) if given in high doses. Both the doses and the parts used are essential. For instance a leaf may be toxic, whereas the root is safe if given in the right dosage. All NHV products have been specially designed by a holistic veterinarian and master herbalist with over 50 years combined of experience in plant-based remedies. Only the safe and helpful parts of each herb are being used in the formulations. Our remedies can safely be doubled or tripled because the density of the herbs are very low and bioavailable for rabbits. There is ongoing research that shows how Echinacea can actually activate the immune system in rabbits!

What is a good diet for rabbits with kidney disease?

For a rabbit with kidney problems, as their pet parent, you will want to keep their diet low in sodium and phosphorus. Also, increasing the amount of water and green foods will help flush their system and keep them better hydrated. A phosphorus binder such as Eggshell powder can also be added to prevent calcium buildup (kidney and bladder stones).

Do rabbits feel when they have kidney infection?

Just like humans, rabbits feel discomfort when things are off. It is difficult to say how or what they feel because as their pet parents, we can only observe physical symptoms that present themselves. The most common symptoms for rabbits with kidney problems are:

  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Inappropriate urination
  • Change in frequency of urination
  • Straining to urinate
  • Abnormal urine color
  • Fever
  • Soft stools, or diarrhea, or constipation
  • Possible seizures
  • Tender kidneys (abdominal pain)

Why do rabbits eat their own poop?

Did you know that rabbits create two kinds of poop? The main kind we see are the hard dark pellets, in their litter box, while cecotropes are sticky and wet and are normally eaten directly from their anus (so you may not see them!) Cecotropes are produced by the cecum and contain many beneficial amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes that are essential for breaking down and absorbing food. Rabbits are essentially digesting their food twice to get as many nutrients as possible! To learn more about diet tips for bunny health, read our blog post.

How long will this product last for my rabbit?

For bunnies of all shapes and sizes, the dosage is 0.5 mL twice a day (1 mL per day). So for a 100 mL bottle, it will last roughly 100 days (just over 3 months).

Why is the left kidney lower than the right in rabbits?

Much like us humans, a rabbit’s left kidney is located slightly lower than the right kidney, due to the location of the liver on the right side of the body. Unlike the other abdominal organs, the kidneys lie behind the peritoneum that lines the abdominal cavity and are thus considered to be retroperitoneal organs.

What nutrients are important for a pet bunny?

Rabbits have the same basic nutritional needs as humans. They require carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and water. However, unlike humans, rabbits are herbivores so they derive all of their nutrients from plant sources.
